Is a 1/2 caret diamond solitaire ring for $500.00 a good deal?
I found a beautiful solitaire to go with my enhancer. Everyone else wants over $800 for a nice solitaire. I have never bought a real diamond before and i need some advice on buying them. I’m buying it for myself.
marquee cut
its a D-F quality and S2-S1 clarity.
Yes, that is an excellent price. ( comparing it to the wholesale prices from diamond dealers I have ordered diamonds from)
(If you don’t mind, I’m going to clear up some misinformation posted by another responder here…)
The D-F means the diamond is colorless, D being the best you can get. (GIA developed the color grading scale starting with the letter D (in the 50’s) in part to avoid confusion with the older European grading system- NOT because they might find whiter diamonds! – (You can’t get any more colorless than colorless!)
SI 1 -SI 2 clarity diamonds are actually very nice clarity. You will not be able to see any imperfections (inclulsions such as feathers (breaks in the stone) crystals, clouds, needles, twinning whisps and other clarity characteristics) with the un-aided eye. Only with a jeweler’s loupe (pronounced “loop”) will you be able to see these flaws.
Normally a 1/2 carat that size ( if not clarity enhanced or fracture filled ) would range in the $800 to $1250 ( and up depending on the seller ) price range, figuring in on how well the diamond is cut as well as what gem lab is grading the stone (GIA graded gemstones tend to be more valuable as their grading is considered the best you can get) .( Btw, the Marquis shape is NOT the hardest shape to cut. It’s actually harder to cut a heart-shaped diamond ) A diamond’s shape is usually determined by the shape of the rough diamond crystal.
Editing to add to respond to Hat a tat…it is not nitpicking when you correct misinformation. It is misinforming someone when they state that ABC was left available for whiter diamonds…read the link that I posted from GIA stating the reason they start with D…
The GIA standard for the Best color of diamond ( when referring to non fancy color ) is Colorless not White.
Here is a link to the GIA color chart…
